Department of Physics was started in 1993 during silver jubilee year of the college with the commencement of B.Sc (Physics main) course. Till then the department was offering subsidiary courses for B.Sc. (Mathematics) and pre degree students. Prof. P.C Jose was the Head of the Department till 1995. The department gradually grew under the headships of Prof. E D John (1995-99) and Prof. M R Thomas (1999- 2003) and became a post graduate department in 2012 with the introduction of M.Sc. Physics course when Prof. L J Jojo ( 2003-16) was the head of the department. Prof. K K James was the head of the department from 2016 to 2020. The department regularly organises national seminars, workshops and lecture series by eminent faculties, science day celebrations, industrial visits, sky watch etc. as a part of the teaching programme. The department also interacts with various national institutes in training our students during the various stages of their study. The learning process in the department provides them with opportunities to pursue higher education in institutions of national importance. The academic knowledge, experimental skills, and research experience provided by the department help our students to take up the teaching profession, research programmes etc.. At present the department is headed by Dr. E. D. Dias. Winning of the University first Ranks both in M.Sc. and B. Sc courses are one among the recent achievements of the department.
At present, the Department offers courses in M. Sc. Physics ( Self Financing) and B. Sc. Physics with Chemistry and Mathematics as Complementary Courses and also the Complementary Course for B. Sc. Mathematics and B. Sc. Chemistry students. The department offers an Open Course: Non-conventional Energy Sources for the students of other departments.
Our educational endeavors aim at helping the students to be intellectually competent, spiritually mature, morally upright, psychologically integrated, physically and socially acceptable so as to enable them champion the cause of justice, love, truth and peace.
Department learning process provides them with the opportunities to pursue higher education in institutions of national importance. The academic knowledge, experimental skills and research experience provided by the department motivate our students to take up teaching profession, research programme, etc. so that the science community and society as a whole is benefited.
