Faculty projects provide an immediate link between teaching and research. The research may be intrinsically productive but it can also be a chance to test ideas and take controlled risks, provided these objectives are consistent with educational objectives. The types of work which may be appropriate projects are numerous and are limited only by the imagination of staff and their educational context. Conventionally the project is a practical, experimental investigation but, as illustrated by several detailed case studies, it may take diverse other forms provided certain characteristics and objectives are met.
