Department Overview

A recognised research centre of the University of Calicut from 2014, the Research and Postgraduate Department of English is one of the first departments established along with the inception of the college in 1968. Continually blessed with vibrant and engaged faculty, the department  concentrates on fine tuning the English language skills of the general English students of the Undergraduate stream. Further, it endeavours to  elevate the literary sensibility of the students and to sensitise them to the issues that problematize our surrounding community and  the world at large.

Gifted and dedicated teachers like Mr. Antony U.V(1969-1996), Mr. Paul Davis M.D (1969-2000), Mr. John Mathew T (1979-2001), Dr. Fr. Jose Pellissery P.V (retired as the principal) (1981-2003), Mr. Paulson Chalissery (1974-2003), Mr. Thomas Kadambatt (1978-2004),  Dr. T. Muraleedharan (1982-2015), Mr. Shaji Pathrose (1989-2017), Dr T.K Pius (1989-2019), Dr Thomas John (1989-2020) and Dr.Fr.Babu K T (2009-2020) built the department and the students it catered to with rigorous care.

In 1995, the department got upgraded to offer a postgraduate course in spite of the absence of a complementary degree programme. The PG course introduced Communicative English at the postgraduate level for the first time under the University of Calicut.

At present the department teaches a variety of socially and culturally significant courses like Women’s Studies, Dalit Studies, etc, as part of its MA English programme. In 2013, a BA Degree programme in English with Audio-Visual Communication and Journalism was launched.  Later, it was changed into a BA English Language and Literature course.

Various books and articles published by our faculty members have contributed to the knowledge repertoire of the discipline. At present, one faculty of our department is a research supervisor under University of Calicut. In the course of the history of the department, faculty members have served as PG/UG Board of Studies members of University, question paper setters of Autonomous colleges, editorial team members of University text books, etc. The department regularly organises seminars and workshops on topics of contemporary relevance.  National Seminar on South Asian Heteroglossia (2017) and International Seminar on Images of the Self and the Other (2018) are some of the seminars which were organised recently.

The department guides its students down paths of discovery, and UG and PG students, whether planning to enter professional or academic job markets after graduation, leave with skills allowing them to communicate, collaborate, and solve problems in an increasingly-globalized cultural landscape.

Student–faculty interaction is the foundation of our pedagogical praxis. At present, 15 faculty members (aided and self- financing stream) dedicate themselves to teaching excellence and outstanding scholarship.
